Clay, glaze and a bench

Tribute to Diana Devonshire by Lesley Andrews at St John The Baptist, Mildenhall I have here a small piece of clay and a jar of glaze.  The clay is not like the stuff we dig up in the garden.  It's slightly wet. I can squeeze it, and it feels and looks more like mud. It is a special potters clay: white St Thomas.  The glaze has a name too, Mallard Green. These very simple materials are the starting point for a quite amazing transformation undertaken by Di. &nbs...Di Devonshire pot 3

The Bursary Award 2017 goes to Bryony Cox

I met this year’s winner of the Marlborough Open Studios Bursary Award, 26 year old Bryony Cox, Upstairs at Jack’s in Devizes to find out more about her life as an artist so far and her hopes for the future. As it turned out, the first floor café could not have been a more appropriate setting. Seated near John Wragg’s paintings I learnt that Wragg had lent Bryony a small studio space in his house, not far from Bryony’s home. Bryony grew up a few miles away in Little Cheverell where she...Bryony Cox Bursary winner 2017

The commissioning process of ‘Cipher Wave (Alexandra’s Angel)’ After completing the ‘Templar Stone’ commission in 2004 I was invited by Swindon Borough Council, on behalf of David Wilson Homes, to consider submitting a sculptural design for their new housing development called Alexandra Park, south of Wroughton, near Swindon in Wiltshire. OS Artists feature in the Wiltshire Museum's annual fine art auction.
With hammer at the ready, Marc Allum from the Antiques Roadshow hosted the annual art auction at the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes. Marc who has recently moved to Chippenham, brought a great sense of flair and personality to the occasion that auctioned off £14,000 worth of fine art to the well healed crowd of art lovers. The collection of only 12 works this year is specially selected by the organiser of the event, Dr Alan Cowley, who is on our 2016 art trail. This year's auction included several O...

What is an Open Studio? - THE LOW DOWN

Here is a quirky article that tries to explain what an Open Studio scheme is for those who want a little bit of art in their life... Everywhere in the UK there are artists, designers and crafts people working from home or their studios and being ridiculously creative. These arty types toil away with, what some may describe as a futile and self-indulgent desire to tinker around making stuff, but those of us who are enlightened know otherwise. Those creatives are making intriguing, beautiful if no...
