Nettie Baskcomb Brown
Nettie Baskcomb Brown is a botanical artist using primarily her home grown bee-friendly flowers, or wild foraged flowers, in her art.
Bas-relief Botanical Art comprises of intricately detailed 3D textured, tactile, plaster or concrete panels made from fresh seasonal flowers.
Botanical Mixed Media art, using the same source of flowers, introduces a whole new dimension and technique to her floral art.
Nettie's latest bas-relief works include new collections of 'Botanical Intaglios', 'Bee Hives' and a complete 'Botanical Braille Alphabet'. Nettie encourages you to 'touch' these tactile casts. Her Braille Alphabet has embedded braille in each flower cast making them inclusive and accessible.
'Close your eyes and feel every intricate details of a plant - almost like a fossil'.
To make her botanical casts, Nettie presses a selected collection of fresh flowers into clay in a way to re-create their natural movement and drama.. She carefully removes each leaf, seed and petal by hand to create a negative impression, into which she pours a plaster mix to make a sculptured botanical design. These casts are then cleaned, dried and sanded, and can be left natural or tinted with watercolours.
This year Nettie is also exhibiting her new mixed media botanical art. Using her large pressed flower collection, Nettie incorporates both these and mono-printed real flowers in unique designs and collages, using acrylics, inks and pastel medium. These original pieces range from vintage pressed flower bookmarks and cards to larger framed floral paintings.
Nettie offers private botanical workshops, personalised garden casts and special occasion flower preservation.
This year Nettie is sharing her home with Anya Hope Medlin - a new MOS member - who is an incredible photographer displaying powerful yet sensitive images of local forests and landscape.
The studios: On entering through double coach house gates, customers will be able to browse the latest concrete casts on the outside walls. Through the main front door there is a vaulted gallery leading to an office gallery on the left and upstairs to a 'wet' workshop where there will be several works in progress to study. Anya will be taking over the 'front room' (at the far end of the stables) overlooking the garden she has helped to pimp up for the Open Studios in her 'garden designer' hat! This will be accessible through the main door or further along the building.
Also available:- Workshops, Garden commissions and wedding bouquet preservation
Currently also exhibiting a collection of framed bas-relief intaglios at Talos Art Gallery & Sculpture Garden near Calne SN11 0NX until 5th July
I look forward to seeing you during the open studios - do contact me if you cannot make a weekend date and would like to view privately.
