Nettie Baskcomb Brown
'Close your eyes and feel the detail of every leaf, seed and flower of the plant - forever preserved in plaster - like botanical braille.'
Nettie's collection brings a different perspective on the ephemeral beauty of our flora, not through colour, but through texture. Originally working in mixed media - using pressed flowers - Nettie started experimenting with ‘textured art’ on learning that her brother-in-law, a keen gardener, was rapidly losing his sight. She now uses a highly textured and tactile medium known as ‘botanical bas-relief’.
Bas relief, or ‘nature art’, is an ancient technique which botanists used to study plant species. Nettie uses fresh botanical specimens which she presses into clay and the imprints are then cast in strong white plaster, thus permanently preserving their form in textured relief. The cast is allowed to dry before being cleaned and is either left as natural or can be coloured in watercolours. Nettie has gone on to develop a unique way to produce these bas-relief panels in concrete for either interior or exterior display.
As a gardener, scientist, beekeeper and archaeologist Nettie is particularly drawn to plants that feed the bees, ancient plants, nature’s medicines and wild foods.
‘ There is an urgency about collecting flora for my art - every walk in a garden or landscape inspires me to capture a specific moment that will never be repeated'
The studio: On entering through double coach house gates, customers will be able to browse the latest concrete casts on the outside walls. Through the main front door there is a vaulted gallery leading to an office gallery on the left and upstairs to a 'wet' workshop where there will be several works in progress to study.
Also available:- Workshops, Garden commissions and wedding bouquet preservation
Currently also exhibiting at Talos Art Gallery & Sculpture Garden in Heddington, Calne SN11 0NX until 21st July
I look forward to seeing you during the open studios - do contact me if you cannot make a weekend date and would like to view privately.
